I know you did say you didn't want to hack your 3ds, but I did want to share my experiences if they could make you feel better about bricks and stuff. Another thing about bricks is there are protocols taken in the hacking process in order to make sure that if a brick somehow happens, you can restore your 3ds and overcome the brick easily. I'm pretty sure it's impossible to brick your console whatsoever, unless you're purposefully aiming to do so.
